  • Most of the indian cooking involve too much cooking of vegetables and it loses nutrition. Steamed cooking retains most of the nutrition and seems to be recommended way of cooking¬†everywhere. Other good way is to roast vegetables.
  • So finally i bought steam basket. And to my surprise, it’s very quick to steam and vegetables tasted so good. Carrot never tasted this sweet. If you have never tried, must try.
  • Here’s what i did: Put some water in a pot and arrange your steam basket.. You need very little depending on your vegetables. I added hardly 1/4 th cup.
  • Once water boils, add your cut vegetables. Close the lid and let it steam.I did cauliflower, broccoli , carrots and some green pepper. You can add some greens too. I will try that next.
  • These vegetables took hardly 3-4 mins to cook. They look very vibrant once done.
  • Vegetables should have little crunch to it. Do not over cook again. ūüôā
  • Once done, i added little salt and lemon juice. You can add black pepper if you like.
  • You can add some avocado, tomatoes too after vegetables are done.
  • With a side of brown rice, it was too good. You can have as a side dish too with your regular meal and you will get some nutrition.
  • Try it out. It’s really good and doesn’t taste all blah like what most of us think .
  • Enjoy !

Yogi’s roasted salad

IMG_0738

  • Idea came from my teacher Pradip¬†and when it comes to food, i do ¬†implement his ideas.¬†¬† ūüôā
  • Both chinese medicine and ayurveda doesn’t recommend raw food since it’s hard to digest for most of the ppl and there are other reasons like in Ayurveda, raw food is not good for vata¬†problems since it will increase vata.
  • Solution is to roast or toast them lightly.
  • Chop your vegetables and try to include all colors of rainbow. I used broccoli, yellow-red-green peppers, mushroom, squash, carrot. Sprinkle some almonds¬† or your choice of nuts.
  • Now roast it in oven or toaster oven for 15-20 mins.
  • Once roasted, add chunks of avocado, cucumber¬†and tomatoes.
  • For seasoning, add white vinegar and black pepper powder. That’s all. Yes, you read that right. NO SALT.¬†You can use fresh lemon juice too instead of vinegar. Vinegar , lemon juice will help with digestion.
  • If you are trying to lose weight then have this salad¬†first and then eat whatever you want to eat.
  • By including all color, you will get all your vitamins.
  • Salad turned out really tasty. Am sure you will like it too. Do try.
  • Have a healthy, tasty, delicious meal and stay healthy.
  • Health is wealth !

Yogi’s soup

IMG_0608

  • Simple recipe from my yoga teacher Pradip. He made this soup for us when we did “Meditation in motion” all night long. I just love it b/c¬† i can be creative with it and it’s so simple yet filling and nutritious.
  • Boil water and ¬†add chopped vegetables like carrot, parsnip, turnip, potato, soft tofu, tomatoes, peas, green beans, spinach or any greens you like (Try some new chinese greens), sprouted mung beans, chick peas or any beans you have,¬† tsp of¬†boiled dal(lentil) if you have, whole wheat pasta etc. Open your fridge and add anything you have.
  • I also add dried seaweed that i¬†buy at asian store. They are naturally salty so no need to add extra salt.¬† Last year in fall, i¬†got dry cough that kept me awake at night and then my acupuncturist told me to use seaweed. That took care of my dry cough in no time.
  • Simmer it on medium or low for 20-30 mins depending on time and your wish. You are the boss here.
  • Now the fun part. Add 1 of your favorite spice like sambhar¬†powder, rasam¬†powder or pickle masala . List goes on…I like to add rasam¬†powder but then i¬†add whatever i have.
  • Enjoy by itself or with some sandwich or whole wheat bread.
  • Check out whole wheat jalapeno bread recipe in bread section to go with this soup.
  • What’s yogi’s soup? Yoga meaning unity so yogi’s soup is¬†what unites. To do that,¬†you use what you have and don’t get into fight with yourself that i¬†don’t have this and that.¬†
  • Even in life, we got to use what we have and not keep complaining of what we don’t have or stop living life¬†b/c you don’t have something.¬†¬†
  • Be creative and most imp, have fun !

This whole wheat bread recipe is from my yoga teacher Pradip.¬† We did “meditation in motion”¬† all night long once. Basically, we all baked different kinda breads and as dough was rising or breads were baking, we mediate. It was a wonderful experience and was so much fun to taste all different breads at the end. We had banana bread, apple bread, cumin bread, orange bread what not and of course i baked jalapeno bread.

Here’s the ingredient list.

1 package dry yeast
1 cup water
3 cups whole wheat flour
1/4 cup butter
1 egg beaten or  1 tbsp flex seeds pwd with 3 tbsp water soaked for few mins.
2 tablespoon sugar
2 tablespoon onions
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1/2 teaspoon garlic
PLUS sundried tomatoes, olives… your choice adds. I added Jalapeno.

  • Follow usual bread baking procedure. Taste great with some¬†olive oil drizzled or roasted garlic spread ¬†or soup.
  • Today i roasted some vegetables and it was a great combination.

Have fun with your creativity.
