Summer Tips

  • According to Ayurveda, summer is a season of Pitta and in Chinese medicine, summer corresponds to element fire.
  • So diet should be pitta pacifying.
  • All summer vegetables are high in water content and hence good to beat the heat.  Like zucchini, yellow squash, bottle gourd, turai, green beans, okra , cucumber, peppers etc etc.
  • Buy them fresh if possible . I don’t mind paying high price to get them fresh.
  • Plenty of fruits available in summer.  I have seen many ppl making shakes. It’s best to enjoy them by themselves instead of making milk shakes. Just my opinion.
  • According to ayurveda, fruit and dairy is not a good combination. Only certain sweet fruits are ok with dairy.
  • It’s good to end your lunch with home made buttermilk which is 1 part home made yogurt + 3 or 4 part water. Add salt, cumin powder for flavour.
  • Too much cold food makes digetsion week. So Ice creams, all iced drinks cause digestion problems. If you have digestion problem, try to avoid cold things for a while and see if it helps.
  • Make colorful meals in summer using all colorful summer vegetables and fruits. Eat less and light.
  • Enjoy Summer !

Sabudana in fast?

  • Sabudana is very popular among fasting indian ppl. People use it liberally to make khichadi, vada etc.  So I want ppl to think for a second abt sabudana.
  • Sabudana is mainly starch and not much nutrition value. It absorbs so much oil.
  • And there’s a you tube video on how sabudana is made. After seeing it, i almost stopped buying sabudana. If you want to see, google it.
  • I had tried to do ekadashi fast and i never ate sabudana. But winter time it’s hard, so i decided to eat sabudana khichadi for lunch. Next day  i felt worse than what i feel eating my regular meals. I felt like i had too much food. Of course, i dropped ekadashi fast.
  • This was just my experience and experiment so do what works for you.
  • Sabudana is good when you are sick and digestion is poor. I remember having sabudana kanji growing up whenever i got sick. It gives body some quick energy. Didn’t know all the science behind it at that time.
  • Pose, think and then continue…
  • I still enjoy my sabudana kichadi once in a while. 🙂

Quinoa with desi tadka

  • While i was having quinoa salad y’day for lunch, i realised that cumin seed seasoning in ghee will go very well with Quinoa. Call it my hunch or intuition or whatever.
  • I couldn’t wait to try it out and had to make early morning today.
  • Heat ghee and crack some cumin seeds. Add some veggies like potato, carrot, green peas, colored pepper, corn and jalapeno if you like spicy like me.
  • I also added some raw peanuts and cashews. Add salt.
  • Once veggies are cooked, add cooked quinoa and mix it well. Adjust salt and add some fresh lemon juice.
  • Garnish with cilantro.
  • Voila ! It was awesome.
  • Try it out. You won’t be disappointed.
  • Tip:  Quinoa technically is not a grain so if you are doing grain free ekadashi fast, then quinoa is a good option.
